79 super beetle fuel tank

First of all I am a new be and happy to be here.
I kept smelling gas only to discover whoever redid the super beetle fuel tank, crimped the 2 vent lines on
the rear of the tank drivers side. I had my mechanic pull the tank and connect the vents with a fuel vent line. Well
I discovered the lines were also bent and turned up no doubt splitting the vent line. My question is where do I
purchase a fuel tank in S/W Pa.

I would try to save the tank if you can. If it's not leaking try to fix the hose lines. Can you put new fuel hose for the vent lines?

Is it still fuel injected?

The worse part is you'll most likely have to order one online. Unless someone has an extra tank laying around.

CIP1 usually has the cheapest prices. But their shipping is very slow. They have a new non-fuel injection tank for $180.

No longer injected--carb. I think we over looked a split in the metal nipple where we put
the vent hose. On a new tank these 2vents go to the evaporator and go straight out of the tank.
Relieving the pressure on the gas cap , stops forcing the gas out . May look for vented gas cap.

You might be able to find a vented cap at a local parts store. On the later cars VW put a bunch of extra vents for emissions. Most of them you could cap off.

I'd suggest running a single vacuum hose as a vent. Usually the vents come off the over flow hose by the filler neck hose. Red circle in picture. Then you won't need a vented cap.

Had my mechanic pull gas tank and put a vent line on the drivers side 2 vents in the back of tank. Found out
the 1 vent line was split so cut them off and J B Weld both vents shut. Got a vented gas cap at NAPA Auto
703-1703 -problem solved. Now the gas gauge stopped working . Should be 7 gal. of gas in it -will carry a
2 gal. can and run it out . Maybe on next fill-up it will start working! SO far satisfied.
